A. I can't imagine that any publisher would actually publish volumes of fanfiction - I think there would be legal implications - but there are plenty of websites. Livejournal has communties entirely devoted to Harry Potter slash.

Where can you get fan fiction published?
Q. I was planning on using Lulu but you can't publish fan fiction, so are there any places that would publish it? I would only want a few books for me and my friends, I do NOT want to sell it. I'd want it to be like Lulu, but of course it needs to let you publish fan fiction. Thank you!! I want to publish it into a book, not on a website.

A. Publishing fan fiction into a book actually would infringe copyright on the real owners of the original story/characters. They might sue your publisher if they do so - they wouldn't want that. :(

How can you create a fan fiction archive for free?
Q. I have created a Twilight RPG web site, and wish to add a fanfiction archive to it. Does anyone know where I can find a way to create a fan fiction archive and / or a fan art gallery for free? Thanks! :-)

A. The best thing I could think of would be deviant art where you can upload both pictures and literature. What you added wouldn't be the only things on the site but if you had a username you could create a gallery which can also had different categories. Bravenet would also be pretty good because it has lots of wed tools such as blogs, albums, forums and free websites; any of which could be used for your own needs. You could also use a free website maker such as piczo which can be used to create almost anything really. Or you could always start a blog on something like Live Journal and use each entry as a new story (making sure to use the Live journal Cut' and archive to your full advantage).

What do you think most authors' opinions are on fan fiction that is based on their work?
Q. I think I read somewhere that JK Rowling has nothing against it at all, but then there are authors like Anne Rice who prefer people didn't do it. I know I'd be flattered if one were to write any kind of fan fiction about something I'd written. What do you think?

(Not since the divorce, anyway! ;>) ) First, that the writer even remotely thought I would be flattered (I'm well known for my bad temper), and second because she got everything wrong from the very first sentence. She had my main character killing a dog and that's something he'd never ever do! Grrr! I threw the story across the room and it took all evening for my friends to calm me down. The next day I mailed the story back and GENTLY explained that I was not allowed to read it because of copyright issues with my publishers--which is true. Can you write a fan fiction based on another show?
Q. I want to write a fan fiction on this show but I'm wondering if I can base the storyline off Ross and Rachel from Friends. Can you do that? Thanks!
Asked by Alexis - Fri Jan 15 20:38:42 2010 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Actually, you cannot write fanfiction on anything. Many authors and producers have banned their stories from such use. I did go to FanFiction.net and noticed they did have 'Friends' fanfics under their TV category, so you are okay to go. That is a good way to tell if you can write on a certain show. If you don't see a show or story you wish to write on, you can submit a new category request to them and FF.Net will let you know if it is legal to post your story.

Those actually seem to be the most popular. I'm not going to post the links here, but if anyone wants them just contact me and I'll pass them on. Are there any notable authors that used to write fan-fiction?
Q. I'm just curious. I see that so many aspiring writers write fan-fiction. Personally, I think that fan-fiction is pretty silly and unoriginal. I'm just very curious to know if there are any notable authors that started out writing fan-fiction - and I don't mean one or two small pieces - I'm talking about somebody that was really into it. Do you know of anybody? Ha, ha! Did you notice that the question that posted /just/ before mine is about Twilight fan-fiction?

A. I wrote one fan fiction. I did it as a gift to Stephen Colbert to thank him for the wonderful time I had taking my son to his show on his 21st b day - VIP seats and all. However it is a little bit different, because I wasn't using fictional characters as my characters, I was using real people. I put him into the character of a 40's Detective Noir Style PI. It's posted at Colbert Nation. They love it and want another. I doubt I will do it. No time. It was a one shot deal. Its under Persiphone Hellecat if you want to drop by. Stephen is my homeboy. I adore him. Pax-C

How do I go about starting a fan fiction?
Q. I'm trying to wrote a new fan fiction. It's one for The Outsiders... about Sodapop and an Original Character(OC). However, I can't figure out how to start it. I'm always having trouble starting stories. Does anyone have any tips on how to start a story that takes place decades before I was even born?
Asked by Shelby - Tue Jan 12 00:47:21 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Sure! Always start the story with with at least one or two paragraphs of the actual author's story as the lead, and then begin with your own version. Also, to make it as realistic as possible, go to an online newspaper and look in the archives at the articles from the time period. Read several newspapers from that time-period so you get a feel for what things were like at that time. Also, research the movies and music, so you know what people were listening to, and who was on the movie screens. You should also research who the big-name politicians were, and what shows were popular on TV then. I wrote a fanfic about the Outsiders, too. In my version, Ponyboy and Johnny flee the state, acting on Johnny's desire to go someplace different. [cont.]

Is there any literary or creative value in fan fiction?
Q. Are fan fiction writers doomed to unoriginality? Do they deserve some credit for imagining new contexts and characters for already written stories? Are they living vicariously through the fantasies and ideas of other writers? Can they become original writers in the long run? Yes, no, may be?
Asked by Troy - Fri Nov 27 21:53:27 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Fanfic is good practice to improve your writing style (grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, imagery, etc). I know rather popular published authors who write fanfic for the fun of it. I've read some truly excellent original RPS fanfic that was better than most published work I've read. So, I'd say definitely yes.

Pretty straightforward question. Is writing fan-fiction good practice for honing your writing skills?
Q. I'm getting the writing bug after a few years away from it. I'd eventually like to write my own stories and make up characters of my own. But in the meantime, would fan-fiction be a good skill builder?
Asked by jlb777 - Tue Aug 3 01:31:52 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I think so! I find it useful for practicing story structure, language, and exposition. But of course, you don't have to characterise a lot in fanfic because your audience already know the characters, so that's the area I find I get no practice in. But for stretching creative muscles and for funsies, I find it's pretty useful :)

Q. Why would any one want to write fan fiction? It seems like a waste of time, maybe as an exercise to become a better writer it would be useful but seriously, come up with your own ideas! What do you think?

A. It's more of wish fulfillment than serious writing. They find characters they *really* like and they want to be them, so they write out their fantasies around those characters. That's why the majority of fan fiction is just "Harry Potter shacks up with [insert character name here]" ;) It's kind of like a day dream that they feel has some artistic merit, when it's more just the indulgence of fantasy. That said, sometimes people use already existing characters/literary worlds for parody or satire or something actually worth while. An example of this might be if someone took characters from The Odyssey or something, and wrote a new story that isn't just based around wish fulfillment. Maybe Odysseus is looking for WMDs or something. You… [cont.]

Can somebody please explain fan fiction to me?
Q. I know what fan fiction is. What I am wondering is, why? Why do people take all that time and creative energy to write about someone else's world and characters. It is great that someone has created characters so amazing that they are hard to let go of, but why all the fan fiction? Wouldn't all that creativity and time be better off spent coming up with something original, something of their own? It is kind of sad in my opinion.
Asked by LolitaSanchez - Tue Aug 12 15:09:24 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Not sad at all. If you really love a world or story setting and you want more of it, you have to wait for the author to create more. Or you can create your own, or read another fan's work. Fan fiction may start with an existing world and characters, but it takes off from there. Think about this: People send in script ideas for existing TV shows. Granted, it's not fan fiction, but it's the same idea.

A. No, I don t believe that s possible. The reason is that, those certain characters are not the writers own, and no matter how much they(the writer) loves that character, he or she doesn t know as much about them has fthe real writer did. The writer can and probably will be bias when writing also(their favorite character having good fortune and their least favorite having countless misfortunes happening to them).

It can be alright if it's well written, like Convenant Dance said, but also like he said, most of it's hurts my spleen.

Fan Fiction walks a VERRRY thin line between being creative writing and being plaguristic. I think it's somewhat flattering when fans want the stories to continue, or want their own aspect over control of the characters themselves. A. Fan Fiction is a direct copy of the original characters from either an author, playwright of TV / Film Company. This is written in new and often exciting ways by members of the public who place this on the internet. At the start of each story there is a disclaimer telling the world at large that the characters and places that are in the books or TV show or film belong to the Author or Company. This is to show that no copyright infingement was meant or taken. In this case Harry Potter and his whole universe belongs to J.K. Rowling. Any original characters that the writer has dreamed up are thier "intellectual property" but the school and the magical world remains the sole copyright of JK Rowling. It is worth stating that the… [cont.]
