Why do people write fan fiction?
Q. I write parodies sometimes, but that's not the same thing. Most authors don't appreciate fan fiction, and some encourage websites not to allow users to post fan fiction relating to their books. It can be alright if it's well written, like Convenant Dance said, but also like he said, most of it's hurts my spleen.

A. I have no answer for this. Being a published author myself, I find "fan fiction" cheap, distasteful and practically theft. I assume it's justified by the fans saying, "Oh I loved this so much I want to create my own stories based on YOUR characters." But in what other world would this be acceptable? Imagine, Fan Fiction for "Great Expectations," "Sound and the Fury," or any of the classics. It would be attacked instantly by any educated human alive. Fan Fiction walks a VERRRY thin line between being creative writing and being plaguristic. I think it's somewhat flattering when fans want the stories to continue, or want their own aspect over control of the characters themselves.
